Fitness Friday: Making it Fun | The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans

How many of you exercise?  Workout?  Get the heart pumping?  Go ahead, raise your hand.

Do you ever get bored with exercising?  I know I do.  Even though I love to run, there are some days a lot of days where I just don’t want to do it, or the idea of running gets pushed to the bottom of the list of things to do because well, because it’s easy to put off things you don’t feel like doing, especially if it’s boring to you.

Here are some ways I keep my fitness routine fresh and fun sometimes even exciting.

  1. Music.  Music is an important component for me for exercising.  I love to listen to music, especially if I am doing strength training, riding the bike, or running.  BUT, I get tired of the same-o, same-o music on my iPod.  I exercise enough and listen to my music enough that I know the order of songs by heart.  From tim to time, I will add new music to my list, but even then, I find it hard to find *new* stuff.  So spill it- what are your favorite songs (new or old) to exercise to?  You can bet everyone will be checking the comments of this post to see what everyone else is listening to and if they might want to download it themselves.  The last time we did this 8 months ago, it was wildly popular.  You can check out that older post here.
  2. Do it with a friend.  That sounds all kinds of wrong get your mind out of the gutter, but what I mean is to enlist a friend or family member to exercise with you.  Typically I exercise by myself, but I have found that when I DO exercise with someone else, the time just flies by as we are usually chatting the entire time.  Nothing makes exercise go by quicker than if you are talking it up with a good friend.  Also, I find that with the right friend, we encourage each other to work just a little harder, sweat a little bit more, and we almost always laugh.  If you are into swimming, biking, or running, a lot of gyms will have groups that are dedicated to that specific sport.  You don’t even have to belong to a gym to find a group.  You can do a google search on “local running group” and see what you find.
  3. Mix it up.  On the days that I have the option to cross-train or run, I almost always cross-train I do enough running as it is, why would I want to do MORE.  I like to mix up the exercise by biking or doing the elliptical machine or taking a class.  In the past, I have shredded, done the Wii Fit, done other Wii programs, kickboxed and did circuit training.  Do something new and your body AND mind will thank you.  Something that I have my eye on is taking a Zumba class.  It sounds like so much fun to me!

What about you? How do you keep exercising fresh and not boring and something you look forward to c’mon, you look forward to sweating and burning muscles and feeling your middle jiggle, right?

Go ahead and share- inquiring minds like me want to know!
