Sisterhood Virtual 5K and C25K (Couch to 5K)

I run with the Sisterhood

I like to run.  Well, it’s more like wogging (walk+jogging) but whatevs.  I get the job (ie mileage) done.

Prior to October 2009, I was vehemently OPPOSED to running.  I mean, it hurt, I sweated a lot, my breathing sucked, and did I mention that it hurt?  Why would I want to willingly and knowingly put my body through that?

Now I know that the reason it hurt is because I was pushing my body too hard, too fast and oh yeah, it wasn’t used to moving that way.  DOH!

Enter the Sisterhood Virtual 5K of 2009.  A group of my wonderful, brilliant, awesome sisters had this wonderful idea of training and running a 5K, virtually.  That meant we chose a training plan and committed to doing the plan on our own.  We chose a weekend (Nov 7, 2009) for everyone to run their individual 5K’s at home, asked everyone to take pictures and then we shared the experiences.

Although at that time running was NOT my choice of exercise, I joined the 5K Virtual movement I was forced to do it because everyone else was doing it.  Isn’t peer pressure the BEST?!

Little did I know that participating in that Virtual 5K challenge would lead me to where I am today- willingly and knowingly choosing running as a form of exercise, I’m about to run my SECOND half marathon in 2.5 weeks, and unbeknownst to us here at Shrinking Jeans, we’ve inspired a whole new group of newbies to embrace running.  That little-bitty 5K that a bunch of us committed to in 2009 yielded spectacular results.

How awesome is that?!  So guess what?

It’s time to do it again- woot woot!

The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans is hosting our 2nd Annual Sisterhood Virtual 5K.

Here are the pertinent details:

  • Training will begin on Monday, November 1st. Yeah that’s in just a few days- wheee!!!!  There’s no better time to start a training program than right now, right?  Don’t worry though, if you are reading this AFTER November 1st- you can STILL join us.
  • We will be following the Couch to 5K training plan (C25K).  It is a 9 week training plan that has been embraced by hundreds/thousands/millions of folks around the world.  It is wonderful for the beginner runner/walker.  Although I have been running for a year, I will be using this program to increase/better my pace : ).
  • You do not have to already be a runner to do the training program.  In fact, C25K was developed for new runners, as in folks that have never run before.  Your “runs” are broken down in minutes- as in, jog for 1 minute, walk for 90 seconds.  Lather, rinse, and repeat.  Eventually, over 9 weeks, you will build up to jogging 3 miles (or wogging for me, ha ha).  Really, YOU can do this.
  • We here at the Sisterhood will be there to support you along the way.  Pinky promise.
  • All of us participating will run a 5K VIRTUALLY on January 8th, 2010.  Why January 8th, you ask?  First off, because it’s 9 weeks after November 1st!  Secondly, because we want to support some of our other running sisters who will be taking on the big kahuna of races (some are doing a half marathon- 13.1 miles, others are doing a FULL marathon- 26.2 miles) at Walt Disneyworld on January 8th.  As in all that we do, we want to encourage and support you guys (our new runners) and we want to encourage and support our “old” runners.
  • Grab the “I run with the Sisterhood” button, copy and paste to your blog and BLOG about your training!
  • In the very near future, we will be offering NEW Sisterhood shirts through Cafe Press.  Once those are finalized, we will announce it and then you can buy one : ).
  • One more thing, I can already hear a few of you saying to yourself- I’m NOT a runner, I’m too big to run, my knees hurt, I don’t exercise yada yada yada.  There are so many excuses to give yourself- heck, I had a MILLION reasons why I couldn’t run.  Finally, I shut off the voices in my head and just did it.  I am by no means a fast runner, and it’s taken me a while to get where I am and truthfully, if I had not had the support of the Sisterhood back in the hard months, I might not be a runner now.  If you start off walking and end up walking the entire 5K, then that’s fine- at least you are moving and exercising.  We are PROUD of all of you, regardless of your level of running/wogging/walking.
  • Because we love you so much, we have collected a Round-up of Running posts which includes links to Couch 2 5 K, where to get started with running, finding the right pair of running shoes, and MORE!

So tell me, will you be joining us for the Sisterhood Virtual 5K on January 8th, 2011?! Come join our discussion on the ‘hood!

I’m definitely in. Having been one of those newbie runners back in Nov 09, I want to encourage EVERYONE to try this. I went back and read my post from that day. I had to walk the entire 5k at about a 14.5 min mile pace (it took me 45 minutes). About 2 weeks ago (12 days actually), I RAN MY FIRST 1/2 MARATHON at about an 11:15 pace. Never underestimate what your body may be capable of!

A quote I read somewhere once said, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.” Let’s all start thinking WE CAN.

    • Christy_TheSistherhood

I am so excited to see a whole new group of Sister runners being born out of this challenge!! I cannot believe that one year ago we were those girls :) I love you girl!!!!

  • Christy_TheSistherhood

Here is the link to my race report from last year’s Sisterhood Virtual 5K. It was my first official unofficial race, and reading back over my words brings a tear to my eye! I had NEVER run before starting training for that race with all of my Sisters. I didn’t think I would ever be able to do it, but I did. And I’ve completed a 1/2 marathon since then with plans for many, many more!

Don’t think you can’t do it!!

  • Lisa

I just went back and looked at my posts from last November, when we did the FIRST Virtual 5K. I wrote this one right before the Virtual 5K and it brought me to tears, at how emotional running is for me and cathartic.

And then I wrote this race report after my first official race, just a few weeks after the Virtual 5K and on Thanksgiving Day. The Turkey Day post really makes me tear up because that race was so emotional for me.

It hasn’t always been easy and actually, running isn’t “easy” for me, but it is so worth it.

  • Brooke F

I’m out…seeing as I will be attempting 26.2 the following day. But I’ll be virtually cheering you on as I cheer on our half marathon sisters in Disney!!

    • Lisa

We’re doing the Virtual 5K in honor of YOU (and all the other sisters running at Disneyworld). GO BROOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Lisa

Oh yeah, if I didn’t have to travel to do the marathon (as in shell out money for airfare and hotel), I would totally consider doing the marathon with you since I am already training for my half in 2 weeks. WTH am I going to do next? I need to find another race to do in Jan/Feb, one of a long nature, whether it be a half, a full (GULP), or something else.

        • Anonymous

I’m with you Lisa, I need to be training for something! I think I’m going to train to run the “Disney 1/2” virtually and then in January, training officially begins for either another 1/2 or a 25k (15.5 mile) race in May!

  • Anonymous

YAY! I am so excited! This will make my 5k training so much more fun knowing that I’m not doing it alone! Woo-hoo! Hopefully my nerve block won’t get in the way!

    • Lisa

Nope, you won’t be going it alone! What’s up with the nerve block? Tell it to stop bothering you already : ).

  • Anonymous

Ya’ll are changing women all over the world, you realize that, right? You have already changed my life forever! I WILL PARTICIPATE this year!! And I’m going to try to find other friends in the area so I won’t be doing it alone HERE! I’m hoping to actually RUN most of this one!

    • Lisa

Yippee Ann! I am so glad you are joining us this year and I am so proud of you for making positive changes that will impact your life, forever.

  • Nancy

Yes, I will. I’ll be kicking it off with a walk/run on November 6. The Run Baby Baby Run 5k. I know you remember it, Lisa! I just got a gymboss and a heart rate monitor that is coming today in anticipation of this event. I’m in a better frame of mind this year than last and plan on giving this my best shot. Love you girls!!

    • Lisa

I do remember it Nancy, and I LOVE my shirt- thank you again!!!! I so want to get a Gymboss- I’ll add it to my Christmas wish list. I’m so glad you are joining us again this year.

      • Nancy

The Gymboss is only $20. through Amazon. My heart rate monitor just came with NO instruction manual! I just emailed customer service. Hopefully, they will send one out asap.

  • Natasha

I am definitely in though I would rather be running in Disneyworld ;). Ironically I have been doing the C25K program and was up to week 6 until I went to Disneyworld for vacation and haven’t been able to get motivated to start again.

For those of us that are already partially into the program how do you suggest we proceed?

    • Lisa

Natasha, how long has it been since you stopped during C25K? If it’s been a while, then you might start with the beginning. If it was just a week ago, then I would back up a few weeks and start there.

  • melissaaustin

I am a new follower here. I will be joining in. After dealing with a weight problem and coming face to face with my food addiction I am working on being a better me. My goal is to lose the weight and run a marathon in 2011

    • Lisa

Welcome Melissa! By chance, do you live in Austin? One step at a time, one step at a time- you will reach your goals and then surpass them.

  • Tracie

I’m in, but it will all be on the treadmill. I’m not too fond of the cold.

  • Stillmary

What an inspiring post. Right now, after reading that and completing the Shrinkvivor challenge, I’ll feel like I could do anything. And with running, maybe I could do more exercise in a shorter period of time. I’m in!!!

    • Nancy

You and me Mary! We’ll show them what the older girls can do, right?

      • Mary

        Right on, Nncy!

  • Anonymous

Please please please, ladies…. DO IT!!! I started Couch 2 5K in January. I weighed over 200 lbs and was soooooooo slow. I ran in the dark of morning when no one could see me. If you keep it slow you can train and NOT GET HURT!!!! You will progress faster than you think you can. You can do this. I had to take a few months off for shoulder surgery of all things but I think I’m doing rather nicely now. I take my time and go at my pace which means I am slow as a turtle but I’m moving and sweating and loving every minute of it.

I’m in! And it’s inspired me to dust off the ol’ blog — the one I started back in the ReThink Your Shrink Days. My success with and utter enjoyment of Shrinkvivor has me wanting to see what more I can do! With the ‘Hood, there is no end of support and therefore no end to my ability to keep on keepin’ on toward health and fitness!
My first blog post about it.

  • Melissa @MelGetsFit

Well, my race report from last year was very underwhelming (LOL), but here it is. You might want to just skip right over it and go down to the recipe. It totally rocks!

On a side note, just reading that it’s time for another virtual 5k made me get a little, ok … a lot, emotional. It was the virtual 5k last year that lead me to the Sisterhood for the first time. I saw someone on Twitter do a RT about it around the time people were starting to train, so I headed over here to check and see what it was all about. I added the site to my Google Reader and started following it. It wasn’t long before I started to leave a comment here or there, began training to walk the 5k, started following other Sisterhood folks on Twitter, etc. I signed up for the ‘Hood on Nov. 6, 2009. I joined Team Shrinking Jeans in January 2010.

Even though my weight hasn’t changed as much as I would like, my life has changed immeasurably. and all for the good! I feel so fortunate to have met so many fellow Sisters in person and to call them friends. Words simply can’t express how much I love this place and all of you. So, yeah, I will definitely be doing the Virtual 5k again this year.

    love this!!

I REALLY want to be able to do this and be able to run the 5K on Jan 8th. My only concern is that I have tried this traiing before… didnt get very far due to severe shin splints, to the point I could hardly walk let alone run. So I’m a little scared to try again. But I will. I hope I find away to get past that issue. I also will have to go to the gym to do this since my treadmill at home is now out of comission which totally sucks!

    • Lissa_ShrinkingJeans

Did you try any of the stretches to relieve the pain? I have found that does wonders when starting to run. Seriously. Let me know if you want me to share some of them with you!

      • Anonymous

        Oh please do share.

      • Anonymous

        Oh please do share.

What fantastic timing. I just began my own C25K last Tuesday, and due to canning 19 quarts of green beans over the weekend, and last minute putting together of DD’s Halloween costume, my week 1, day 3 didn’t happen over the weekend. So, I’m only 2 days ahead, and looking down the road, that probably means about the time this gets hard, we’ll all be about on the same day. Woo! Count me in!!

  • Anonymous

I’m definitely in. I am on a quest to lose 20 lbs by the end of the year and this will help a ton!!

I am so in. This could not have come at a more perfect time. I am so excited to start training for something again. My treadmill has been collecting dust and needs to get used again.

  • barb_at_jiggles

I’ve got you and your wogging beat — mine is more like jalking…emphasis on the walking :)

I’m having a bit of heel trouble right now, but still count me in for the 5k in January (brrr…who thought January would be a good idea??) Here’s my first post about it:

  • Adah

I have my podcast downloaded and I’m ready to start the C25K training. I never thought I would be excited to run but I am! Tonight I tie on my shoes and go for my first run!!

    • Anonymous

      Go Adah!!!!!!!

  • Tracey G

This is great timing! I’m ready to start… just had a baby and have gotten the okay-to-go from the doctor. Woohoo! Healthy, here I come!

  • Anonymous

I am so in! I started the C25K during shrinkvivor, but the last 2 weeks I was so busy that I barely had a chance to work out. I am back on board and started today with week1 day1. Definately easier the second go-round!

  • Erin W.

    I’m so in!!!

  • Catie

Yay! I am so in and so excited:) I just started this program a couple of weeks ago and now I have all of you to train with!
Although I am going to start a new blog to chronicle it in order to keep my family blog separate.
