Holiday Hoedown Check-in: Week 4

[ 25 ] 12/15/2010 |

Holiday Hoedown Challenge

Yee-haw!  I cannot believe that we are shooting into week four of this challenge.

The holiday season is hard upon us and if you are like me, you are striving to see the forest through the trees and NOT get trapped in the commercialization of Christmas and all the things we *think* we have to do.  I am trying to stay focused and on-board with this challenge but let’s face it, IT. IS. HARD.  The point though, even if it is hard to find time to exercise, even if it is hard to put down that holiday cookie/alcoholic beverage/chip laden with dip- you have to try.   I am trying.  I need to try harder.

What about you?  How did the past week go for you?  How many exercise minutes did you rack up?  What was the one new thing you tried?  I’m too embarrassed at my low number of minutes exercised to share it a mere 189 minutesbut I did try two new things- I took my husband’s road bike out for a spin- I haven’t ridden a real bike since I was a kid.  Let me tell you that a real bike is way harder than the stationary bike at the gym- yo!  My poor buns are yelling at me to buy a gel bike seat, for realz ya’ll.  The second new thing I tried was the Body Kombat fitness class at the gym- it’s a combination of kickboxing, tai chi, karate and other stuff- ouch.  My body was SO sore the next day, which is a good thing, I guess.

Of course, you know that we want you to go weigh yourself.  I know, I know, weighing myself isn’t exactly my favorite thing to do especially during the holidays it ranks right up there with stabbing my eyes with a forkbut it must be done.  Go ahead……go do it……right now……and come back and share the news with all of us.  Blog about if you dare and/or drop a comment down below or use our friend Mr. Linky.

Fitness and Non-Fitness Challenges for the Week

For the fitness challenge, we are continuing with exercise minutes.  I challenge each of you to take a look at what your weekly exercise minutes have been thus so far and then I want you to try and blow it out of the water this week.  Yes, I understand that a lot of us have kids and holiday parties and Xmas shopping/wrapping/card writing etc to do (I am one of those people), BUT I want you to make a commitment to yourself to find some time somewhere in your day to exercise.  You will thank me later and your body will thank you now.

For the non-fitness challenge,  I want you to give yourself a pat on the back, a high-five, a job well-done about something, anything, every. single. day.  I picked this challenge specifically for myself because the past week has been particularly hard/stressful/overwhelming for me and I have been down on myself as a mother/wife/runner/blah blah blah.  I am good enough, smart enough and gosh darnit, people like me (name the TV source of that phrase) and now, I need to remind myself of why.  Every single day, share with us something positive about you- something you like or admire about yourself.  It could be ANYTHING- a physical trait, a behavior, something that you do for others……ANYTHING.

Ooof…back up a bit this week, but on the non-scale side, I’m doing better about getting in fruits and veggies into my day. This week I ditched the small bag of chips I used to take for lunches and replaced it with baby carrots and hummus. Yum!

*ugh* What a rough week! I gained back everything I’d lost so far! (But I did enjoy myself in Amish Country – yummmm). One NSV – hmmm…I didn’t go back for seconds on dessert at the AYCE Amish Buffet? :o)

I am down 2 pounds from last week. I doubt it will stay that way. LOL My non scale victory is running for 25 minutes at one time for my c25k program. We are on week 7. Yeah. Only 2.5 more weeks to go before we are running a 5K.

My biggest non scale victory was starting the Shred over again & doing Tworkout last night.

  • http://smartstrongsexy.blogspot.com Brooke F

talking myself through an 18 mile run was my biggest N/S victory. Then immediately following the run only getting chili and a baked potato instead of the bacon cheeseburger I wanted.

Managing to get in crazy amounts of fruits and vegetables this week was my biggest NSV. Hoping to do that again over the next week!

  • Ashley S

My NSV is that I’m 2 finals away from finishing the semester and have channeled a lot of my stress into positive things, like cleaning, running, and making meals at home, instead of going into typical shutdown mode! :)

  • Kati S.

For sure my biggest non-scale accomplishment was portion control all week! It is amazing how ‘not’ hungry you are when you start controlling you portions! Definately made a big mental breakthrough for me on how easy this just might be!

  • Armywife4758

I worked really hard this week since not losing at all last week. Dropped 2 pounds and thank goodness because I really hit the treadmill and watched everything I ate. It was a real eye opener- whoa.

My biggest victory this week was being in a car wreck and walking away. That doesn’t sound like anything I DID, but with my body in better shape now than it was a year ago it sure seems to be handling the stress and trauma better now! =)

    • Mary P.

Wow! I’d say that is a HUGE victory! Glad to hear that you are OK!

  • http://plainolegrandmaislosingit.wordpress.com Adah

my biggest NSV was actually running 25 minutes without stopping. That C25K training has really pushed me outside my comfort zone!!

  • Virginia

This last week my goal was to run without stopping. I made it for 45 minutes! I haven’t run that long in 15 years!!!!!

  • Mary P.

My biggest NSV was stopping at just one Gingerbread Cookie Martini while out to dinner last night w/ friends — that drink was so delicious I kept thinking of foregoing the entire meal to have another one instead lol. BUT i got a healthy dinner, w/ a healthy side of veggies instead. Also, just not turning to bags of chips when dealing with all the holiday stress and work stress I have going on!

  • Jamnsfld76

This week I am down one pound. Which I feel is huge since I have my monthly visitor here (dear dear Aunt Flo).

My non-scale victory is that I don’t feel bloated this week like I did last month, must mean I have avoided excess salt and am eating better. YAY ME! Also proud of getting in so many miles this week, our team tracked minutes and miles and I logged 7 miles this week.

My biggest non-scale victory is going back and making myself write down when I splurged last weekend. Posted here: http://www.color-me-crazy.net/2010/12/true-confessions-i-actually-have-good.html

  • Pubsgal

Does having a really fun weekend count toward NSV? If so, then victory is MINE: got to go to a movie, a concert (both long-anticipated), a fun birthday party, and a drive to look at pretty lights! Oh, and I also tried our Tinsel Vixen Mini-circuit (Mini-skirt-cuit? Okay, I’m reaching with the cuteness here.) Our team collaborated in coming up with a total-body circuit, and it’s a winner! (I’ve got it posted on my week 4 check in, with links to pages that show how to do each exercise, if you want to give it a try!)

Good luck on week 5, everybody!

Ok…so it wasn’t a great week as far as exercise was concerned but at least I lost some weight…a little is better than a gain, right?!!

  • Skystargirl

I’ve been putting in some crazy minutes! I’ve changed up my routine and it’s going well. I’ve also worked on saying positive things to myself already. I’ll c ontinue that for sure!!!

  • Jessi M

Biggest non-scale victory for me this week = completed my 2nd 1/2 marathon!

  • http://msxj.wordpress.com/ xj

Hi Friends! Biggest nonscale victory – I don’t like sweets as much as I did! =)

  • Anonymous

My biggest non-scale victory, hmmmm. I drank more water than usual. I’m trying to get that water in. Which reminds me, I need to drink up right now!
