Honey!

[ 11 ] 02/11/2011 |

PhotobucketI tried and tried to think of a clever title for this post, but clever didn’t seem to be in me today.

So you get “Honey!”

You’re welcome.

Anyhoo, who here uses honey?

I’m a recent convert. I never ate honey when I was growing up unless the rest of the cereal box said “Nut Cheerios” or “Combs”.

But in an effort to clean up my eating, I now use honey as my go-to sweetener.

I add 1 teaspoon of it to my coffee in the morning and 1 tablespoon to my plain Greek yogurt. I make chicken glazes with it. I use it in baking. I accidentally squeeze too much out of that cute little teddy bear so that I can wipe it up with my finger and eat it.

I just feel better eating it. It’s more natural than white sugar which has been processed the heck out of. It’s definitely more natural than artificial sweeteners. And since I use local honey, I have noticed a marked decrease in my seasonal allergies. It’s like an all natural allergy shot.

Is it a wonder sweetener? No. Of course not. It’s still a sweetener and you have to use it in moderation. Is it better than sugar, well…. I think so. But honestly, when I went out to do research for this post, I couldn’t find a whole heck of a lot supporting that claim.

So, very quickly, this post went from a “Here’s why you should eat honey” post to a “I sure do like honey!” post.

So let me open it up to all of you. What do you use as your go to sweetener? Why? Did you hear it was a better option than anything else out there?

The floor is now open for you to help me write a better post discussion.

GO!

Now that’s something I’ve never done.  I’ll have to try that!

I actually don’t use any sweetners, really. I don’t use sugar in my coffee. I don’t bake any sweets or make many foods that require sugar. We have had a bag of sugar in our cabinets for so long – we finally had to throw it out because it was just a big rock.

We do keep a bag of raw sugar in the cabinets, however, and that’s what I use if the need comes up. I prefer raw sugar because it hasn’t been processed to death like white sugar. I don’t know much about the health benefits vs. white sugar…I just like to stay as “unprocessed” at possible.

I’ve now switched my yogurt to eating Chobani or Oskos greek yogurt – and they both use natural sweetners (whatever that means). My other “sweet” treats use artificial sweetners, but I eat them very rarely.

In regards to honey – I use it during the spring when my allergies get rough and when I’m sick. I don’t like to use medicine – so I use natural remedies. Honey is a staple in my “medicine cabinet”. Mixing it with some warm milk is great for a sore throat. Mixing it with hot lemon tea is great for a cold. And I just take a teaspoon a day for my allergies – when they are really bad.

Another vote for honey for allergies!  Yay!!

And I wish I could get to the point of not using any sweeteners in my coffee.  Babysteps, right??

LOVE honey!! I use “regular” sugar too when I’m baking sometimes, but now I usually use honey or apple sauce to sweeten things up. Like you said local honey is a great natural allergy reliever, so with all our allergies I use LOTS of honey! I am trying to use the “if it aint natural, it aint good” line of thinking to see if that will help me in the weight loss department so honey will be a continued staple in my pantry. It’s gonna be sooooo hard to do but I think when I get it done I will be much better off!

I always forget about applesauce in baking!

I put honey in my hot tea, but that’s about it. I hate iced tea that is sweetened – YUCK (yes, my southern friends will think I’m nuts). Sadly, my go-to is usually Splenda. I’ve gotten used to it having diabetics in my house.

Is Splenda the only thing they can have?

We use honey in lieu of syrup on breakfast stuff. I also like it in hot tea. And it’s really helped your allergies, huh?

Yep. I’ve always had a problem seasonally, but when we moved out here, my allergies went INSANE! Having local honey has really helped.
