Bee Your Best YOU! {fight cancer + iPad2 giveaway}

[ 38 ] 05/07/2011 |

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of BeeWell for Life. All opinions are 100% mine.

In the United States, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in the course of their lifetime. My very own maternal grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer in her 40s and luckily, is still here with us well into her 80s. Cancer is something that affects most all of us in some way, shape, or form.

BeeWell for Life is a program started by Bumble Bee Foods in 2010. The site focuses on ways to live a full, healthy, happy life.  You can find tips, recipes, even a social community! With their Walk and Bee the Difference initiative, for every mile you run/walk/bike between now and the end of the year and log, Bumble Bee will donate $0.10 to Y-ME. Y-ME is an organization that offers support and education to those diagnosed with breast cancer and provides emotional support from breast cancer survivors. No one should have to face breast cancer alone. To date, more than 1.5 million miles have been logged and over $450,000 donated! Get logging!

Bumble Bee Foods is hosting a game of Twitter tag at Tag4Cancer.com The prize? An iPad2! Who wouldn’t want to win?? Click on the link to play and raise awareness for breast cancer. It’s easy! Hurry and tag your friends, the promotion ends on May 20, 2011!

Izea is also giving away an iPad2 to one lucky winner who comments on the blogs involved in this campaign. {Read the contest rules here}

To enter: Comment on this post and mention a friend by linking to their Facebook, blog or by twitter handle. Tell us why or how your friend inspires you to be fit or make a difference for others. {example: @theirnamehere inspires me to be healthier by…}

Blog contest will run through 1:59 p.m. EST on May 31, 2011. Good luck!

Let’s kick cancer to the curb!

    I am inspired by so many of the wonderful ladies I’ve met through this site. I am so inspired by Christie O. When I was fundraising for Relay for Life last year, she inspired me to do a fundraiser on the treadmill similar to the one she did when she was fundraising for TNT. Watching her complete triathlon after triathlon and overcome her fears is truly inspiring. She has such an amazing heart and supports amazing causes! I feel privileged to have met her! @christieo:twitter

    My buddy @maxpapis inspires me as an athlete, father and
    husband (in no particular order), his never quit attitude has taken him to the
    heights in performance in motorsports maintaining a healthy fitness lifestyle.
    He is a bicyclist and now is working in conjunction with a company which
    manufactures heart rate monitoring and fitness assessment equipment. Through
    his indefatigable character he continues to be a professional athlete at a time
    when many would retire. And, he’s a pretty neat person. Despite his busy
    schedule his wife and children are everything to him.

    @camoginger inspires me as my husband and as a US soldier in Iraq. He misses out on seeing his babies grow up in order to secure our nation’s freedom. I am so proud to be his wife!

    @angelajames:twitter is one of my very dearest friends she inspires me to fit everyday by being one of my biggest supporters. She is the kind of friend that cares enough to tell you like it is, even when it’s something you don’t want to hear. She encourages me to keep trying, in the past she has issued me challenges when all I could see was the number on the scale, she tells me how wonderful I am doing even when I am not, she makes me feel like all of this is worth it. Her praise, encouragement, support and no beating around the bush advice, is what I love about her. She’s the best!

    My husband, Matthew Amick (FB profile http://www.facebook.com/?ref=hp#!/profile.php?id=100001243248184) is a HUGE inspiration to me. When he was in middle school, he was overweight, so he decided to do something about it. He started playing sports and he started running. He also adopted healthier eating habits, which is hard to do as a teenage boy! When he and I met in college, he was trim but not very active. His eating habits had slacked off. We got married and after five years of marriage, we started having children. After our second son was born in 2008, Matthew decided he was not going to develop the middle-aged man gut and decided to take up running again. After one 5k in June, he signed up to run a full marathon that November. He trained for months, and not only did he run a full marathon in November, he ran another one in January, along with a 5K. Since then, he has run two more full marathons, three half marathons, two sprint-triathlons, eight more 5ks (including a mud run), and the Ragnar race, a relay race where his team of six ran a combined total of 195 miles in 24 hours. I mean, is he the MAN or what? I have never been much into exercise, much less running. But when there was talk of a Disney trip, my ears perked up. On a whim last October, I signed up for the Disney 5K in January, knowing full well I couldn’t even run for 45 seconds without stopping. I started the Couch to 5K training program that very day, and the rest is history! I not only ran that 5K, I have run two more since then, and have another one next weekend. I am running a local 10K in June, and have already signed up to run the 2012 Disney half marathon. ME!?!?!! My husband is extremely supportive, encouraging me to get out and run, doing what he can to make sure I get out there three times a week without fail.
    One of my fondest memories of our 10+ years of marriage was running the Disney 5K this past January, my first race ever, with him by my side, pushing our four-year-old son in a stroller. I am so proud of his determination and so grateful for his support. Our three sons are so very lucky to have him for a father, and I am so glad to call him my husband, best friend, and running partner. :)

    my sister (
    http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=1124762981
    ) inspires me. despite having 2 kids & working a full time job she finds a way to get out of bed at 5:30 to get her workouts in most mornings.

    Only one person who inspires me? There are many. Half of them are writers here (all of you awesome ladies inspire me!) But one person who inspires me is @bekkib73:disqus This awesome lady? Not only has she taken charge of her health, she also did it while completing law school. She is a strong (physically and mentally) lady who is an awesome friend.

    I am inspired by several people. My mom, Dana, http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100000205063442, and dad have been losing so much weight using Slim 4 Life. I am amazed at what they have been able to do for themselves. It especially inspires me because I know part of the reason for their weight loss journey is for my son so they can have many many years with him. I know if they can do it I can do it.

  • Dana R.

    My mother (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=625794046) is my inspiration. Last year she had to have surgery on her frozen shoulder, an injury she sustained in working as a nurse. After the surgery, she started walking every day. She slowly changed the foods she was eating, and in the course of the summer, lost over 20 pounds. She is the heart and soul of our family, and this change has made us all healthier–we no longer have soda in the house, not even diet soda, and we don’t eat fast food nearly as often as we used to (we went from eating more meals on the go than we did at home to eating out maybe once a week).

    She’s inspired me to tackle my own weight loss goals, and has constantly been encouraging and supportive. Even when I am inclined to be disappointed in myself for backsliding into old, bad habits, she continues to offer me unconditional love and support. I never feel judged, and that is really a blessing.

    I have been inspired by so many of the wonderful ladies (and dudes) I have “met” here at Shrinking Jeans, but I’m choosing @girlsworld (Kirsten). She has been such a strong supporter of my attempts to become a runner. In addition, she participated in Team Shrinking Jeans and helped raise a ton of money for TNT, while also fundraising for her niece who was battling cancer. I love this girl and I am so proud to call her my friend. http://twitter.com/#!/girlsworld

    My awesome friend @MommyAngela:disqus inspires me (and she doesn’t even know it)! She has 3 gorgeous boys, including one with special needs, and somehow she keeps it all together but still seems human. She makes her health a priority, which I know is hard to do as a stay-at-home-mom, AND she runs, which is something I can only dream of at the moment. :)

    My boss @MilesTew inspires me everyday to not only be healthy but to be a better employee. He lost 60 lbs last year, and since I decided to get on this weight loss journey he’s taken time out to workout with me and teach me about being healthy and I appreciate everything so much. And I try everyday to use the knowledge he has given me to succeed!!!

    While there are sooo many sisters here that have inspired me I would have to say @christieo:twitter is the one I will single out. She reminds me of me now (where she was before) and I can only hope to accomplish half of what she does. She’s an amazing athlete, mom and champion for causes like premature births. She has a great big heart and I adore her!

  • Texas Type A Mom

    My friend @symigoddess:twitter inspires me to stay fit! She works full time as a VP, has a family, keeps a full social schedule, is getting her degree, but always makes time for herself. She inspired me to start running and I ran my first 5k with her in February and will be running my second alongside her in July!

    There are many people I am lucky to have in my life that help me stay inspired to be healthy, including my husband and my best friend. The number one person that helps me stay truly inspired is my 4YO son so there’s no Facebook or Twitter handle to post a link for. He is extremely active and it makes me tired just watching him. Tonight after his soccer class he came home and wanted to be outside playing. He climbed a tree a few times, rode his bike around, and then while I was walking with him as he rode, he said “Let’s go around the neighborhood.” My legs were already achy and tired from my run and it was all I could do to be standing there, let alone make another trek through the neighborhood. I just kept thinking, I have got to stick with this training so as he gets older I can keep up. He is definitely the inspiration that keeps me getting up and working out!

    There are several people who keep me motivated and inspire me. I have friends who took up belly dancing  when they were beyond their teens and twenties. I have friends who send words of encouragement after I have a verbal rant. Most of my friends experience health issues but keep a positive attitude and show me the best life comes from staying active and involved http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=1584638565  Candace is a super example.

    I am inspired by a gaggle of women in my neighborhood. women who wish they didnt have this terrible disease in common and who have banded together in their fight.  They dont whine or lament or, as my people say, KVETCH.
    They move forward and gather strength from each other.

    I pray Id be as they are if forced to walk a mile in their shoes.

    Im not certain—but they inspire me.

    @JillianMichaels (Twitter), while not an actual friend, inspires me because she is an inspiration to my middle daughter, who gained quite a bit of weight after two children in two years with C-sections for both … using her DVD’s and weight-loss plans, my daughter is steadily progressing in her weight loss and fitness goals.
