Couch to 5K Virtual Program

Have you ever thought of becoming a runner but had no idea where to start?  Or maybe you knew that you could start, but then had fear that you wouldn’t finish, or that it might hurt too much, or that there is just no way you could ever be a runner?  Do you want to get from the couch to running a 5K in just 8 weeks?

Me, right before running my first 5K.  In November 2009.  I trained for it with the wonderful ladies here at Shrinking Jeans.  I NEVER thought I could do it nor would do it, but I did.  The biggest reason for trying it(because let’s face it, I did. not. want. to. be. a. runner- too much work, sweat, and aches!  It turns out all the other times I tried to be a runner, I was pushing it too hard from the get-go instead of working up to it- duh).  Positive peer pressure can be a wonderful thing. And yes, I can be that goofy.

Have you heard of Couch to 5K?

It is a program that is designed to get from the couch to running a 5K in just 8 weeks (really 9 weeks).  It is based on the premise that you must ease into your running gradually, and the schedule does just that. You perform three workouts a week for nine weeks. You will alternate timed segments of walking with jogging, and will gradually add more jogging the farther into it you get.

Is this something that you would like to do, maybe with a little support and motivation from an online community that is designed to do just that? Then, please, join us in our Couch to 5K Virtual Program! What exactly does this mean?

  • First, you have to commit to following the Couch to 5K program (abbreviated to C25K for the rest of this post).
  • We will begin following the training program outlined by C25K the week of December 30th.  You choose what day you want to begin- Dec 30, Dec 31, or Jan 1.  You just have to start that week.
  • We will have weekly check-ins to see how everyone is doing.
  • You will have the support of those who have been through this already.  Remember, the majority of us runners didn’t just start running one day.  We had to work up to it, too.  A lot of us used C25K as our foundation to becoming a runner- our launching pad, if you will.
  • We want participation from YOU.  That means you have to comment on the posts, ask questions if you have a question, and show runner love to others.  A large part of the joy of running for me is the community aspect.  If you don’t join in, we won’t know who you are and when you need a little push, a huge nudge, and a hug of encouragement.  You are not alone on this journey.
  • I will be introducing to you a select group of runners who have agreed to mentor a newbie runner.  They will be there every step of the way to help you along the way as you make the journey to becoming a runner- answering questions, checking in with you, and more.  That means I looking for a few newbie runners who want to be mentored!
  • We will profile C25K participants that want to be profiled.  This is a great way to introduce yourself to our community, a way to be held accountable, and to get some exposure for your personal blog (if you have one and if it matters to you). Here is one success story from a few years back- it is one of our most viewed/popular posts E-V-E-R!

What do I need from you a today?

  • A comment down below, letting me know that you want to participate, join in on the fun and get started already with walking, jogging, wogging, and running!  Also, let me know if you want to be profiled on our site.
  • I also need to know who is interested in being considered for a mentee spot.  Raise your hand high in the air if you think that mentee spot has your name written all over it (that means say something in the comments).  Leave a valid email so that I can get in touch with you about next steps to securing those coveted mentee spots- we only have the capacity to take on a few mentees this time around.
  • Think about which day you want to start the c25K training– Dec 30, Dec 31, or Jan 1.

More details to come in future posts- be on the lookout.  So are you in for going from the couch to running a 5K in 8 weeks time?  Just say yes and comment already!

Ready, set, go!!!

I remember when I first started running 2 years ago. Although I was active, I never thought I could be a “runner.” Even in High school I had never ran farther than 1 mile. Long Distances were not for me I thought. But, I had determination and I kept on doing it. Pretty soon, I did my first 5k. It felt awesome to accomplish that. Since then I have done a handful of 5k’s, a couple of 10k’s. I hope to do a 1/2 sometime this year. I would love to mentor somebody to accomplish this goal. My email is
    Thanks! :)

    • Lisa

Angela, we have a small group of mentors already selected for this go-round but thank you SO much for volunteering. Assuming this goes well, we hope to do it again and would love your input. At the very least, please chime in on our C25K posts with your own experiences and words of encouragement!

  • Shannon Word

I would love to do this and what a great way to start out the new year. Living in a small town it is hard to find people to help you sty motivated, because either they are already running or have no interest. Can’t wait to hear from you and I would love to be a mentee!!!

  • Anne

I would love to be a mentee! I am trying to get fit before 50. I will be starting the program in December in Kenya but returning to the US in January.

    • Jane Mastera

I too am looking nifty fifty in the eyes, so congrats to us both!! :-)

  • Jane Mastera

I too think the timing is perfect! I’ve been trying to become more active. I have a BIG birthday coming, and I want to be in the best shape ever! I would love a mentor to help me with my quest.
Thank you for your wonderful blog!

  • Karena @ Shrinking Jeans

I can’t believe I’m typing this, but I’m in. And I’ve already found a race for March 3rd to hold me accountable. Gulp. I’m sure I can count on @girlsworld for Twitter-mentoring, so I’ll leave a mentee space open :) As for profiling me, if you think anyone might be interest in the bumbling, stumbling running tales of a forty year old house wife, have at it!

  • Tanya

I am in too! I need to get back!

    • Lisa

Tanya, please email at so that I can send you the mentee application. OK, that sounds really official but really, I just have a few questions for you to answer. Thanks! Lisa

  • triciamb7212

I’d love to do this :-) Although I live in CT, so if it starts to snow, I’d be forced to run laps around my rather cluttered basement. (It can be done, there’s just something that reminds me too much of “The Yellow Wallpaper”)
Not sure if this needed, but my email is

  • BreAnne Teply Melody

I would love too. Is it too late to start?

  • Niki W

I would love to join. I have recently lost a lot of weight and dream of being a runner. I also think i would benefit of being a mentee if you still have spots.

  • Jessica Tipton Bosman

I used to post here and I used to do the C25K…then we moved and I have used every. single. excuse in the book why I haven’t done ANYTHING fitness related for the last 3 years. I want to get back to the me I was 40 pounds ago. I’m in. Would love to be a mentee if you’d have me :)

    • Lisa

Jessica, please email at so that I can send you the mentee application. OK, that sounds really official but really, I just have a few questions for you to answer. Thanks! Lisa

  • Didi Henry

I was in tip top form until I lost my job and was forced to move back home. I need to be a mentee… Count me in starting on Jan 1st!

  • Adah

I’m just seeing this but I really want to join in! I was doing the c25k program when I hurt my foot long so long ago! Just never got back to it once my foot was better! Hoping this time it sticks. I’d love to have a mentor to push, prod or kick my butt when it’s needed.

    • Lisa

Adah, please email at so that I can send you the mentee application. OK, that sounds really official but really, I just have a few questions for you to answer. Thanks! Lisa

  • BossyBookworm

I so want to do this, but I am truly truly terrified. My bad ankles & knees are a problem that would be helped if I lose a chunk of this 230 pounds I am carrying around. Last April my best friend was taken by breast cancer, and I would love to walk in the Komen Walk next year in her memory. Starting is so difficult.

    • Lisa

I am so sorry about your best friend- cancer sucks. Starting is difficult but even more difficult is sticking with it during your journey, especially when everything is achey and sore and screaming at you to stop. You could always modify the training plan- as in, when it says to *run*, you power walk, or just do something that is FASTER than your normal walking speed. Ann, one of our members here, has done the Komen walk several years now.

      • BossyBookworm

I am determined to do it this time! Could use a little help though; may I be a mentee?

        • Lisa

Since this is our first time doing the mentor program, we are keeping it small with only 5 mentees. Our deadline to apply for the program is tomorrow (Sat). Please email me at for info. However, we will still be posting here at Shrinking Jeans for all participants in the Virtual Program, supporting one another.

  • Misti

I’ve wanted to do a 5K for so long, but I am terrified! I’ve never been a runner, been out of shape my whole life (even when I was skinny, I wasn’t fit) and I am lazy to boot. How do I overcome feeling like I am doomed to fail or give up before the miracle?!!! help!

    • Lisa

The motivation comes from within. So cliche, huh?! I have to say that this very program (or something very similar to it) was what started me on my running journey back in September 2009. The ONLY reason I participated is because of the ladies here challenged me to do it, to at least try the program, saying that if I still hated it after finishing it, then I could then say *running just isn’t for me*. Well, as you can see, I am still running. The support and encouragement I have received from the very folks here- writers and members alike- have helped me through some very tough running times, physical as well as mental. It took me a while to actually believe how very powerful my mind is, just as important as my physical being. I could babble on and on. We can encourage and support you all day long, but ultimately it will be YOU experiencing and executing YOUR running journey. Join us?

  • More Than A Mom

I’d really love to learn and I really need a motivator to push me!! Thanks so much for this great idea :)

    • Lisa

Please email at so that I can send you the mentee application. OK, that sounds really official but really, I just have a few questions for you to answer. Thanks! Lisa

  • Laura

I’ve made several attempts at C25K and have never been successful. I’d love to try again and I always have a lot of questions.

    • Lisa

Laura, Please email at so that I can send you the mentee application. OK, that sounds really official but really, I just have a few questions for you to answer. Thanks! Lisa

  • Erica

    Sounds fun!

    • Lisa

Erica, please email at so that I can send you the mentee application. OK, that sounds really official but really, I just have a few questions for you to answer. Thanks! Lisa

  • Amanda

    Me! I know I won’t follow through without a mentor though. :/

  • Tanya

I would love to do this but know I would need a mentor to help. I can start on the 31st.

I am in, this is my motivation to get started again. I live in Ontario and we are starting to get some snow so this should be an adventure.

  • babyboy3

I did this a few years ago with the sisterhood and then got sidetracked by injuries. I was thinking of starting this on my own already but would love the accountability of a group. I do a boot camp once a week but running is not the same kind of workout. I am in.

  • Carmen T

Jumping on the band wagon!!! For sure will be out on the 1st….maybe on the 31st, depending on what time we get back from NY!!!!

  • Lindsey R

I am in!! Time to stop coming up with reasons not to!! I will start on the 31st

  • crystal

I’m IN!! I have started and restarted the C25K plan SOOOO many times!! Hopefully this will be the time I finish it! I would love to get a mentor is that is still a possiblity!

  • Shelli

I’d like to give this a try. I was doing pretty good with running and then I had to have surgery. Never had the motivation to find the time to pick it back up. Can we opt for treadmill when the weather is too cold???

    • Lisa

Of course you can! Any way you can get it done!!!

      • Shelli

        Count me in, then!

  • Melissa Madole-Kopp

So I hate running, but I also hate my thighs recently so perhaps I should try this. I am in for the 31st.

  • April Kucera

I’m in! I have started C25K so many times. I’m hoping a group devoted to it might keep me through to finishing it. I would love to have a mentor if still possible. My email is

  • Carrie J

I’d like to get in on this! Will start 30th/31st. Started and stopped so many times before getting to those final couple of weeks. Can’t wait for the group to get going!

  • EB

I’ve been trying to do this for the last few months. I only reached the third stage. :( I’ll try this! I will start 1/1.

  • Dawn R

It’s taken me a few days to make my decision. I had a hysterectomy July 2011 and have gained 30 pounds since the surgery so I am scared to do this. Scared because my weight is suffocating me and I’m afraid no weight will come off, which will discourage me. Any exercise I have done since the surgery doesn’t work like it used to. I started the C25K after the surgery, made it to week six and never finished, due to another small surgery on my forehead. I did try a 5K with my son’s junior high school last May. I walked/jogged the whole thing, but did finish it, so I know I can do it. I will start on the 31st.

  • JennD

ok, I’m in. Need to get off my rear, am running a 5k in March for a dear friends cancer research. I don’t run. I tried the c25k a few years ago but kept making excuses why I was still on week 2 for several weeks, then it got cold, then it was Christmas, you get the idea… I like the idea of running, and this seems like a good plan for a good cause. I’ll get out there on the 1st.

  • Stacy J

I have read about these programs for years but have never worked up the motivation to more than just read…I would love the opportunity to join in on this with you. I will be starting January 1st!!!

  • ashley

I want to start the 30th! Just had my second baby, and I have a long way to go to get back in the shape I want to be in. I would also like to run my first race ever. I would love a mentor!

My eating is out of control and I am overweight so I want to ease back into jogging (I was up to 3 miles) But would love to be able to do a 5k run. I need help and accountability! How do I keep in touch with you? I am afraid to post my email here lol.

  • LauraL

I’m in. I need to do something, but I have been so scared of trying this in the past. I feel too overweight, to be honest. I’m going to make the effort for me and my goals — I’d like to start January 1st!!!

  • Keni Lynn Campbell

I’m in! I’ve been running a little bit the past few months, mostly outdoors, but I live in Juneau, Alaska where it’s either snowing or raining most of the year, and while I love running outdoors best, I need something that will motivate me with indoor running, which I do not particularly like. I don’t really want to run in a race or anything as a goal… I just want to be able to run for longer times and for greater distances, so that I can begin to reap the benefits. I like the idea behind running as daily fitness, being that you can do it anywhere as long as you bring the right shoes. I will start on Dec 31.

  • Guest

This is awesome, I am in! I have tried to start running before and failed miserably, because I tried to do too much too fast. I’m hoping to be able to start out slowly this time and work up to running. I am doing a Dirty Girl Mud Run in April and I want to get in shape and just get healthy this year.

  • Mary L

Count me in! I will start today and *hopefully* get my walking buddy here to join me. I used to run religiously and when I stopped the 20lbs I lost came right back. I miss the way I looked/felt. This program is incredibly motivating and I look forward to starting over.

  • Louisa

I’d love to join this journey if not to late. I’ve started the C25k but would enjoy the company and support of others. Love to run but I need to be more consistent and I’m hoping to lose a few extra lbs along the way and make this become a resolution for good health and fitness. Looking forward to this!

I am a 23 year old with 2 baby girls oldest is 13 month youngest is only 7 weeks. I have never in my life diet or exercise AT ALL…. Well after two babies so close together i have no strength left i feel like i can’t do anything, after an afternnon talk with my mom who is 43 and runs everyday i had a great idea ( if she can do it i can too)sooo i decided to start running in order to get back in shape and to gain some energy. We are both signed up for a 5k and only have 19 days to prepare for it…. NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET!!!!!

  • Kilara Dietrich

OK so I know I’m way far behind but I couldn’t do this in Dec. because of knee surgery. I’m only 20 but my Dr. wont do another surgery to fix my knee completely because in his words “I’m not active” just because I’m a bit overweight for a girl. Which sucks for me because I AM active, I climb, I camp, I bike, but mostly I run. I have run a great deal of races including 5k. I ran Cross County in high school. I was by no means the fastest, or even very fast at all but I’m still a runner and I NEED to get back to it. So I’m gonna follow this on my own with one of my friends so I can prove that Dr. wrong. ;) Thanks!

  • Lorij

    When can I start?
