That is OK.
However, I am a runner and also, part of a larger running community.
The Sisterhood introduced me to running a few years ago. I have met the most amazing people by participating in Team in Training through Shrinking Jeans. I have run several half marathons, with the best of friends by my side. I have mentored new runners as they began their own running journey.
I read running blogs. I am always on the lookout for those that motivate, support, encourage me……. and those that inspire me by qualifying to run Boston, whether it is this year or it was a few years ago. I look up to these women (and men) who run way faster than I do- who put their heart and soul into propelling their legs in a forward motion at a very fast rate.
Crossing the finish line after running 26.2 miles is a very big deal.
Most will have loved ones near and at the finish line to greet them, to share in their joy as they do the unthinkable. It is a joyous occasion.
Except when it is not.
Except when the unthinkable happens near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, as spectators crowded around to get a glimpse of their mother, father, uncle, aunt, brother, sister, grandma, grandpa, best friend, co-worker cross the most glorious of finish lines.
In times of senseless tragedy, we draw together. This was no different. As a community, we drew together to make sure those we knew were running Boston were safe and accounted for; however, we worried until they checked in. Thankfully, our runner friends are OK, but not everyone can say the same.
Although my heart breaks for the lives lost to this unthinkable tragedy and I weep for the injuries sustained, I also have much love and respect for the running community, the volunteers who support events like this, the first responders who assist the victims, and the people of Boston who have opened their hearts and their homes.
Unfortunately, evil happens……BUT, love…..LOVE ALWAYS WINS.
Now who wants to go for a run (or a walk) with me?
