Spring is here, and while some of us might be in denial because winter won’t let go, it’s time to start thinking about the warmer months ahead. You know what that means, right? It’s time to shed our, ahem, winter coats. And I’m not talking about your super-cute down puffer jacket. Let’s be real. It’s time to start making some smart snacking choices.

Lots of us tend to get a little soft during the winter months. Maybe you gained a couple of pounds, or maybe you just didn’t hit the gym or treadmill as often. Whatever the reason, one easy way to get back on track is to give your snacking a healthy makeover. Stock your fridge, pantry, purse, and desk drawer with some of these portable snacks because making good choices makes you feel better, and feeling better makes you want to make more good choices. It’s the snowball effect….but wait, we don’t want to talk about snow (groan)!!

Top 5 Smart Snacking Choices:

  1. Almonds – Full of healthy fats, high in protein, and loaded with fiber all of which make you feel satisfied.
  2. Hard-boiled eggs – For only 70 calories, hard-boiled eggs pack a protein punch, plus you probably have a few extra lying around!
  3. Bananas – Mother Nature’s perfect snack, bananas are portable, filling, and delicious.
  4. Dark Chocolate – Sometimes you just need a little sweet to get you through the afternoon. Dark chocolate is loaded with antioxidants, so don’t feel guilty for having a square! One ounce = 180 calories, so be careful not to overindulge!
  5. Cheese – Sargento® Natural Cheese Snacks have all of your snacking bases covered! With 14 varieties, including several reduced-fat options. My personal favorite is the Reduced-Fat Colby-Jack stick.

Sargento Natural Cheese Snack varieties provide a good source of calcium, at least 4 grams of protein and contain 90 calories or less per stick.  The reduced sodium and reduced fat options have 25 percent less sodium and 33 percent less fat than the traditional cheeses, without sacrificing taste.

Sargento even has a really fun tool where you can build a smart snack right on their website. You can drag and drop different options and see what the nutritional values of your snack would be. Here is one of my go to afternoon snacks. String cheese, cherry tomatoes, and crackers.

Sargento recently conducted a survey of SHAPE magazine readers about workplace snacking, and 56% of people said they struggle find snacks that are healthy in their workplace. In another question 64% of respondents said they felt in control of their dieting/eating habits if they had a wholesome snack available. Sixty-three percent of those surveyed said they snacked several times throughout the work day.
