Saturday Readers' Roundup | The Sisterhood of the Shrinking Jeans LLC

If you’re like me, you come across some rather interesting articles or blog posts out in cyberland as you go about your health and fitness journey. There are certain things that catch my eye and with the ease of sharing links to these stories via Facebook and Twitter, well there is just never a shortage of things to read up on.

Every now and then on a lazy Saturday or Sunday, let’s share with each other what we’ve been reading lately. The things that make us go hmmmm, or “oy!” or “what the _____ were they thinking?!”. A healthy-living roundup of sorts. I had booked marked a few stories from the past few weeks. And I would love to know what you’ve come across lately. Anything that was worth a “share” on FB or that you found yourself talking about at the dinner table or Starbucks cafe with your girlfriends? By the way, this includes sharing actually good, ol’ fashioned old school BOOKS, too!

Here are a few things that gave me food for thought recently:

  • “Walk Hard. Walk Easy. Repeat.” from the New York Times. I have been big on the belief that interval training is the magic bullet for any kind of success when it comes to weight loss. According to this article, high intensity interval training is not for everyone. It may be just too physically demanding and too overwhelming. The article goes on to say, however, that research has shown even doing intervals of fast walking followed by slow walking, can prove to give you the same benefits of a HIIT workout. Next time you are out for a walk, why not give it a try? Three minutes fast followed by three minutes of your regular pace. Repeat and repeat and repeat until you’re back home.
  • I’m in a book club and am tied up with that book right now, but as soon as I’m finished, I have “It Was Me All Along” on my nightstand. It’s a memoir from a young woman about her relationship with food after losing more than 100 pounds. I was hooked after reading this excerpt on the Huffington Post. Anyone want to join me in reading this and giving it a go for a discussion? We can call it the Shrinking Jeans Book Bag. Who’s in?
  •  “Being Thin Didn’t Make Me Happy, But Being “Fat” Does” is one blogger’s account of how a low number on the scale did not make her happy. At all. She was at a size and weight many women aspire to. And for her, it just brought about one obsession after another. Sure, I can jokingly say “let me get down to that size and then see if I’d have the same problem.” But who knows? Who can say? I have a family member who once told me “Mary Therese, I think life would be so much happier if we were thin. Every aspect of life would improve. Everything!” This came from a male member of the family, by the way. At the time, I believed he was right. Since then, I have also come to learn that I have a good life even now, even with a long journey of weight loss still ahead of me. Even, The Today Show picked up on this story.
  • More food for thought:  “Officials declare ‘eating healthy‘ a mental disorder. The technical name of this  mental ailment is orthorexia nervosa.  The author argues that the driving force behind getting the word out about this new disorder is the pharmaceutical industry as a way for people to take more medicines to “fix” a problem that really isn’t a problem. When is choosing to eat healthy a sign of mental illness? (minus an obsession factor, which you could say about any way of eating at all.)
  • “Say No to Fish Sticks – 7 Meatless Meals for Lent.” ‘Tis the season, people! These recipes look fantastic for breaking away from the ol’ standards of fish sticks, slice of pizza or tuna fish sandwich. While you’re at it, why not try a few meatless recipes from our sister site, Shrinking Kitchen? I have booked marked the Beany & Cheesy Quinoa Bake and the Aromatic Noodles with Lime Peanut Sauce as two new recipes to try out this Lent. There are many many more to pick from. Go take a look!
  • And can’t overlook this little gem by JackSh*t, Gettin’ Fit: New Wearable Fitness Solutions. If you need a good laugh, or a looking for inventions to submit to that late-night ‘invention telemarketing show’, this is a gold-mine.

So how about you? What have you come across lately? Anything you’d like to share? Feel free to comment about the links posted above and add your own interesting items you’ve seen lately, including books!
