Yoga, the Man Way

So, last January, Danny and I made the stereotypical resolutions to each lead a healthier lifestyle. We started going on walks, cooking more, and, through some major extortion on my end I’m sure, I drug him to a yoga class. It was hard to focus on my downward facing dog when every time I glanced his way all I saw was a hairy butt crack and some serious concentration (he later admitted he was trying desperately not to fart the whole time) amid a room full of tiny women with high ponytails and pink yoga pants. He says that he enjoyed himself but I was never able to get him back to the yoga mat.

I dropped the whole subject until, many months later, Danny came to me with a yoga idea. He heard of a yoga program designed by a former wrestler that he was interested in and wanted us to try at home. Thus begun my love-hate relationship with DDP Yoga, also known as Diamond Dallas Page Yoga. For those of you that don’t know, Diamond Dallas Page was a famous wrestler for 20 years. Wrestling as in WWE, men in tights and spandex speedos, not men in singlets. Even though wrestling is staged, those dudes take hits. Hard hits. And after many years as a famous, competitive athlete in a physically demanding industry his body was worn down. Rather than retire with bad injuries he created a program that combined yoga and his physical therapy workouts. In his own words, it “combines the very best of Yoga, Traditional Fitness, Sports Therapy, and Dynamic Resistance.”

In other words, it’s a program that’s considerate of the damage done to his body by years of hard physical labor, and something we can do in the privacy of our own home, free of the stares of those very bendy ladies. You get your yoga kick in and he gets to work on his flexibility and get tips from an athletic legend. If you are looking for new healthy ways to bond with your guy, I definitely recommend giving a try!
